Cannot make Jabber.org ID through Pidgin

My friend and I have been trying to make her a Jabber.org ID using Pidgin. We've tried various types of names, even random names that would not be taken. Every time we try we get connection errors, different types of errors. So we're trying from different ISPs also. Can't seem to figure out what the issue is.
